Heaven's Admission Requirements

I distinctly remember the first time that I ever rode on a roller coaster. It was at Disney World and I was four years old at the time. One of the things I remember though is in order to get on this ride you had to be so tall. Four year olds are not very tall, especially me. I stood against a decorated ruler, and the person responsible for allowing children on the ride let me go. From what I remember I think I barely scrapped by. My brother who was two at the time stayed with my mom, and I rode with my aunt and cousin. Rides are not the only things that have a standard for admission.

Many people from different nations and different belief systems look forward to heaven or something like it. Most people talk of it as one of the significant motivating factors for living a right life. What does it take for that hope to be realized? There are certain conditions for entrance into the kingdom of God. We are going to be taking a look at what those conditions are.

First it would be well to start off with those Scriptures that talk about who will not be there. “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.” “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” “Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.” 1 Corinthians 6:9,10; Galatians 5:19-21; Romans 1:29-32. It is a long list, but it is well worth reading.

How many of us have been in the list? I know I have been multiple things under this list. If we still do such things as are on that list like the grievous sins of adultery, murder or drunkenness, or some of the lightly esteemed sins such as covetousness, pride or gossip, regardless of how much good we have done, we will not inherit the kingdom of God. Some have the mistaken idea that the righteousness of Christ covers transgression. “But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor.” Galatians 2:17,18. When Christ justifies a person, sinful habits are torn down. One who commits sin does away with Christ's work. That is why no one who is righteous as far as the courts above is concerned will be found doing any sin. Sinners will have no place in the courts above.

Does this mean that anyone who has done these things shall never enter the pearly gates? No, it is referring to those who are still doing them. Paul continues from the first section of this list in 1 Corinthians 6:11, “And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” As he testified before Agrippa of his experience with Jesus on the road to Damascus, he shared what Christ told him was his calling. “To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.” Acts 26:18.Those who are sanctified are those who will receive the inheritance of the kingdom of God. While you may still be under that list, there is hope because the Corinthians managed to get off of it. They have a hope of heaven when Christ comes to take His people home and so may we. 

 

It is not only those who perform sin in the outward life that will not be there, but those that commit it in heart will also be excluded. Christ talked about heart sin regarding adultery in His sermon on the mount, He talked about heart sin regarding murder, and He talked about the sin of covetousness which can only happen in the heart when He spoke the law on Sinai. Christ mentioned that the heart is where sin has its spring. The issue has been in the fountain of the heart and not the stream that comes forth. Lucifer was not cast out of heaven for being an adulterer. He was not cast out of heaven for being a murderer. He was cast out of heaven because of a prideful heart. Sin when it takes place has its origin in the heart.

The principle of the law and everything the prophets have said is to love the Lord your God with all the heart, mind, strength and soul and as a result our neighbor as ourselves. John defines transgression this way, “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.” 1 John 3:4. Sin strikes directly at the principle behind the law. Those who are in heaven will be in perfect conformity to it. When Christ was asked the question in Luke 10:25 “what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”, he turned a question back on the enquirer: “What is written in the law? how readest thou?” To which his questioner replied, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.” Jesus told him he had the right answer. That is the condition for eternal life.

The spirit of heaven is love to God and then others as oneself. Christ demonstrated that when He became a man. It was the violation of this principle in heaven and on earth that has barred Lucifer, his angels, and mankind from the presence of God. It will not be until this principle is restored in us that man will be reunited into the presence of God.

Do you love others at all times? Do you yield perfect obedience to God in love for Him? If you do not, you are far from alone. Our natural condition is in opposition to this law. For we are born of the flesh, and the carnal (fleshly) mind is enmity against God and is not subject to the law of God neither indeed can be (Romans 8:7). To address this need is why Christ came to change us from sinners to be righteous in thought and deed. This is what the gospel is all about, and until we realize that we can not reform our behavior without this transformation, we will be like the disciples toiling at the oars all night through the storm until Christ speaks the word of peace to the stormy sea of our hearts. May we seek Christ to change us and abandon working at the oars of our efforts.

The Aftermath of the Fall

When man fell, the fall gave us a need for a Savior. Before that point there was no need. To understand better what Christ does for us, we need to understand that need first. When Adam and Eve sinned, to put it simply, mankind was doomed to die and disobey for the remainder of his days.

In Genesis we read these words, “of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” Genesis 2:17. The moment the tree was eaten of they would surely die. Romans 5:12 tells us, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin.” Through Adam sin was given an entrance to this earth, and through that sin death was given an entrance to the world. All physical death that we behold is the result of that sin whether it be among mankind, in the animal kingdom, or down to the minutest cell. Death as we know it had its origin at the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Our days are numbered, and for this reason Christ offers life that has no end.

More than just physical death came into the world. Speaking of the work of God in the lives of the Ephesians the apostle Paul penned these words, “Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ.” Ephesians 2:5. What does it mean to be dead in sins? Verses 2 and 3 of the second chapter explain: “Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.” Living like the world in following the devilish proverb “do what thou wilt” comes to mind when reading these verses. When temptation comes to do any sin whether it be adultery in its myriad forms, dishonesty, stealing, murder in the physical and spiritual sense, covetousness, blaspheming, etc. instead of being resisted is embraced and carried out that is spiritual death.

In fact from the perspective of the Bible when one has come to be quickened, that one though physically dead is still considered by heaven as alive. “I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” Matthew 22:32. To contrast this verse 1 Timothy 5:6 tells us, “But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.” One can be spiritually dead while they are yet living. Strange thought that there are many walking dead men today.

Man in and of himself is just as unable to obey the law of God as someone that is dead is able to come back from the grave on their own. Even with all the great advancements we have made in science, we are unable to bring anyone back from the dead. Likewise it is not possible for us to bring ourselves back from spiritual death or others. There is only one Lifegiver, and that is the man Christ Jesus.

When Adam and Eve sinned, they brought upon the human race, yes even the whole earth death and decay physically. Through them mankind's moral strength was severely weakened to the point obedience was no longer possible. This is what prompted God's promise in Genesis 3:15 “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” We being the seed of the woman are promised to have our union with the devil severed by the One who has bruised his head. You who are in this condition and discouraged, look up. Your knowledge of your condition and a longing for something different are the signs that your redemption draws nigh.

An Overview of the Message

When someone fixes computers, cars or anything that is a system of several smaller parts, it is useful for that person to know how everything fits together at the very least in a basic sense. Righteousness by faith itself is a system of teachings that when we understand how to categorize and link them together we can move forward with our understanding of them.

One of the first category of this system is understanding why righteousness by faith is important. The angels themselves have no need of it because they are unfallen. What has made this topic important for us is the fact that we are fallen. Our fall has meant that we are unable to do right with our own strength (Jeremiah 13:23) and that we are condemned to die. Here is our great need and without understanding these points there is no reason to see for the righteousness which comes by faith.

The second category of this is God's solution for the problem of man's fall. Here we find the gift of Jesus Christ to take away our sin. Not only is the penalty taken care of, but also the provision to live a new life. Such topics as the nature of Christ, God's love for man, the gifts of God such as repentance, faith, love, free will, etc. These are all part of God's solution to the sin problem.

Our most important question comes up of how does a man receive the help God is offering. This is where our third category comes in. What is the part of man in his salvation? Does man have a part in his salvation? The question of how is where many stumble who have a right understanding of the first and second categories.

As we make our journey through this topic I will be sure to cover areas where there has been confusion. If I fail to cover a topic thoroughly, please send me an email, and I will be sure to revisit it or make an update to that post.

The Third Angel's Message in Verity

When I began my experience as a Seventh-day Adventist Christian in heart, I remember I would turn to the passage of Revelation 14:6-12, and I would just read it over and over. The event I longed for came after those messages went forth. I wanted to be with Jesus so badly, yet I knew there was a work for us as a people both in reaching the world and getting ourselves ready. In my reading of the Great Controversy, I knew the first and second angel's message had been proclaimed, but the third was either being proclaimed or just simply hadn't been proclaimed by virtue of the fact we were still here on this earth. In the verses following the Three Angels' message we read of the reaping that Christ will do at His return. So what is the hold up? The third angel's message has not been correctly understood, and it has not been presented before all the world.

About a year following giving my heart to the Lord, I came to learn more about a message that was given in 1888 at a General Conference Session held in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I heard and read statements like these: “Several have written to me, inquiring if the message of justification by faith is the third angel's message, and I have answered, 'It is the third angel's message in verity.'” Review and Herald April 1, 1890. “The Lord in His great mercy sent a most precious message to His people through Elders Waggoner and Jones. This message was to bring more prominently before the world the uplifted Saviour, the sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. It presented justification through faith in the Surety; it invited the people to receive the righteousness of Christ, which is made manifest in obedience to all the commandments of God. Many had lost sight of Jesus. They needed to have their eyes directed to His divine person, His merits, and His changeless love for the human family. All power is given into His hands, that He may dispense rich gifts unto men, imparting the priceless gift of His own righteousness to the helpless human agent. This is the message that God commanded to be given to the world. It is the third angel's message, which is to be proclaimed with a loud voice, and attended with the outpouring of His Spirit in a large measure.” Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers 91. In my amazement, I read that the message had come to the church, and then I wondered why we were still here.

You would think that if the Lord had sent messengers that bore the message that it would have gone to all the world, but it didn't. “An unwillingness to yield up preconceived opinions, and to accept this truth, lay at the foundation of a large share of the opposition manifested at Minneapolis against the Lord's message through Brethren [E.J.] Waggoner and [A.T.] Jones. By exciting that opposition Satan succeeded in shutting away from our people, in a great measure, the special power of the Holy Spirit that God longed to impart to them. The enemy prevented them from obtaining that efficiency which might have been theirs in carrying the truth to the world, as the apostles proclaimed it after the day of Pentecost. The light that is to lighten the whole earth with its glory was resisted, and by the action of our own brethren has been in a great degree kept away from the world.” Selected Messages Book 1 p. 235. It was through our brethren of the time that the light of that message was kept from the world. We were meant to be the keepers of the message and its preachers, but instead we became its greatest opposition. Notice how that came about. It was in an unwillingness to yield up preconceived opinions. 

When it comes to this topic, there is such a diversity in positions that it has retarded to a great degree the proclamation of the third angel's message. There used to be a time when we as a people agreed on things such as perfection and the nature of Christ but not so now. We have different positions on justification being only legally declared righteous to it meaning being made righteous, and there are probably other positions. Some say we will keep on sinning up until the second coming of Christ while others have the position that victory is possible in the here and now. Most of the issues that we have today, they did not have in 1888. The preconceived opinions had more to do with the law in Galatians and whether it was the Huns or the Alamanni that were apart of the ten Germanic tribes of Europe depicted in the book of Daniel. If we are going to understand this message and proclaim it in the way God would have us to, we are going to need to be willing to yield our opinions and ideas. If we don't, we may either delay the second coming of Christ, or the Lord may have to pass us by as messengers and raise up others to fill our place.

Our primary problem has been that we do not understand the message, and the evidence for that is in all the varied opinions we hold. This quotation is very enlightening and startling: “We need also much more knowledge; we need to be enlightened in regard to the plan of salvation. There is not one in one hundred who understands for himself the Bible truth on this subject that is so necessary to our present and eternal welfare.” Selected Messages Book 1 pp. 359, 360. This one in one hundred is not simply all of humanity, but the context of this statement is pertaining to a report of a camp meeting in Rome, New York during 1889. Among our people of that time, not one in one hundred understood for himself the truth concerning the plan of salvation, or to be more specific, justification by faith. We often think this doctrine is so simple that we can move on to more advanced subjects such as prophecy, the Sanctuary, etc. To be honest, I believe we understand more of the other topics than we do this one, and none of the other topics matter if we don't understand how we may be saved. You may disagree, but what use is that knowledge if it perish with you? For a generation of people that lived during the 1860s and 1870s, of whom Sister White wrote to ministers that often their congregations knew more than they did, and not one in one hundred of these people still living knew the Bible truth on this subject. How about today? Is it one in a thousand? Is it one in ten thousand? One in a hundred thousand? I think we all know the number might be far lower than we wish.

In this series we want to consider from Scripture and the Spirit of Prophecy this great and grand truth that is so essential now. Point by point needs to be examined as we yield our opinions to the utterance of God in inspired writing. Jesus is truth, and there is only one of Him. There is no room for all these different views being right. The society we live in tries to tell us that there is truth that is different for you, and that there is truth that is different for me. To reiterate it again there is only one Christ, one faith, one baptism. Scripture testifies of Christ, and therefore it testifies of the one truth so essential to every soul.

This all important study deserves our attention, for in understanding it and proclaiming it we will be prepared for the second coming of Christ, the world will be reached in a generation just as it was in days of old, and our Lord's coming will be hastened rather than delayed. Much is to be gained in the time spent here. May we each approach this subject with open hearts to the teaching and influence of the Holy Spirit, not leaning to our own understanding but in every line that we read seeking the knowledge that God would give.

How to Finish the Work of Warning the World

I was at yet another youth conference. On the campus of Southern Adventist University, seminar speakers came up on the platform of the Gymnasium to talk about the seminar they would present. This year the seminar that got my attention was based on how to carry the gospel to the world. I almost didn't go, but it had my curiosity. I asked the speaker for his notes after the first presentation which came from a talk Ellen White gave in Mountain View, California. I didn't read through that talk for another two years. The contents slipped the foreground of my mind and laid dormant for some time.

Another aspect of evangelism I discovered at Ouachita Hills College during my first semester there. We had a guest speaker come for a few days named Dave Fiedler who taught a couple of Eugene Prewitt's classes. It was during our Philosophy of Adventist Education class that Mr. Fiedler shared with us the importance of working the cities. It wasn't for another year until I got to see a live demonstration of the plan in action when I visited Wichita, and then it clicked both talks were related.

I often wondered how will we ever finish the work. Have you ever wondered the same? I have news for you; our Commander from on high gave us a plan to execute. There are several reasons the third angel's message has not spread to all the world, and this is one of them. We have not followed the plan for spreading the message. The purpose of this article is an appeal to all of those interested in finishing this work to speed up its close within our lifetimes by following the divine plan.

You might ask, what is the plan? It is outlined in the North Pacific Union Gleaner April 13, 1910:

     Some have expressed a desire during this conference to send a large amount of means to China for the support of the work in that country. It is right and proper that means be sent to China. God's people are to act their part faithfully in warning that field, and many other fields in various parts of the earth. Already a beginning has been made in many important mission fields in the regions beyond, and God is giving his servants some measure of success in winning souls. As the workers advance in faith, they will find that the Lord is going before them by his Holy Spirit, preparing the hearts of many to listen to the truths presented.

     But while plans are being carried out to warn the inhabitants of various nations in distant lands, what is being done in behalf of the foreigners who have come to the shores of our own land? Are the souls in China any more precious than the souls within the shadow of our doors? God's people are to labor faithfully in distant lands, as his providence may open the way; and they are also to fulfill their duty toward the foreigners of various nationalities in the cities close by.

     Those in responsibility must now plan wisely to proclaim the third angel's message to the hundreds of thousands of foreigners in the cities of America.

     God desires his servants to do their full duty toward the unwarned inhabitants of the cities, and especially toward those who have come to these cities from the various nations of the earth. Many of these foreigners are here in the providence of God, that they may have opportunity to hear the truth for this time, and receive a preparation that will fit them to return to their own lands as bearers of precious light shining direct from the throne of God.

     Although the needs of the great centers of population have been presented before our people over and over again, yet comparatively little has been done. Who is answerable for this neglect? Brethren, consider how you can ever expect to be clear in the sight of a just and holy God if you leave these cities unwarned? Very few of the ministers are carrying forward strong, aggressive work in these large centers where so many thousands are in need of the saving truths we have to proclaim. The means that should be used to carry the message to the cities, seems to be taken away and used where it perhaps ought not to be used. But where is seen a burden in behalf of these cities that have long been pointed out as places that must be worked without delay? Who will take up the burden of this work? Who will labor faithfully to set a right example before the inhabitants of our centers of population?   

     It almost seems as if scarcely any one dare ask a worker to go into the cities, because of the means that would be required to carry on a strong, solid work. It is true that much means will be required in order to do our duty toward the unwarned in these places; and God desires us to lift our voices and our influence in favor of using means wisely in this special line of effort. Over and over again has been repeated the message, "Go out into the highways and the byways, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled." This is a work God's people must take hold of; for it is a work that must be done.

     In this effort in behalf of the cities, all classes of laborers may co-operate to advantage. Especially valuable is the help that the physician may render as an evangelist. If ministers and physicians will plan to unite in an effort to reach the honest-hearted one in the cities, the physicians, as well as the ministers, will be placed on vantage ground. As they labor in humility, God will open the way before them, and many will receive a saving knowledge of the truth.

     Great benefits would come to the cause of God in the regions beyond if faithful efforts were put forth in behalf of the cities in America. Among the foreigners of various nationalities who would accept the truth, there are some who might soon be fitted to labor among those of their own native land. Many would return to the places from which they came, that they might win their friends to the truth. They would search out their kinsfolk and neighbors, and communicate to them a knowledge of the third angel's message. 

     In New York City, in Chicago, and in other great centers of population, there is a large foreign element--multitudes of various nationalities, and all practically unwarned. Among Seventh-day Adventists there is a great zeal--and I am not saying there is any too much--to work in foreign countries; but it would be pleasing to God if a proportionate zeal were manifested to work the cities close by. His people need to move sensibly. They need to set about this work in the cities with serious earnestness. Men of consecration and talent are to be sent into these cities, and set at work. Many classes of laborers are to unite in conducting these efforts to warn the people.  

     When God's chosen messengers recognize their responsibility toward the cities, and in the spirit of the Master-Worker labor untiringly for the conversion of precious souls, those who are enlightened will desire to give freely of their means to sustain the work done in their behalf. The newly converted believers will respond liberally to every call for help, and the Spirit of God will move upon their hearts to sustain not only the work being carried forward in the cities where they may be living, but in the regions beyond. Thus strength will come to the working forces at home and abroad, and the cause of God will be advanced in his appointed way.

To summarize what was just read, foreign mission fields are important, and domestic mission fields are also important. An area that has been neglected to a large extent are the cities of America. Foreigners are brought to America in the providence of God to learn the three angels messages and be equipped to go back to their nation and spread the message there. In the cities workers from different fields are to unite. We need medical missionaries, teachers, pastors, bible workers, canvassers, etc. The cities we are looking at are not small. We are looking at the big cities like New York, Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, and others because of the large immigrant populations there. As this work is done in the cities, it will result in the conversion of others. Those who are converted will support the work not only in the cities, but in the regions beyond that need funds.

This is how the gospel was spread in the first century. Judaea was the launching platform that God ordained at that time. The dispersion of the Jews and the feasts that called them back to Jerusalem were designed of God to carry the message all over the world with great speed. Three times a year all Jewish males were required to be in Jerusalem. One of these times that we know of is Pentecost. The gift of tongues was given at this feast to reach the Jews of all nationalities. Here everyman heard in his own tongue how Christ was the Messiah. The message was carried back all over the world.

In addition to this for the places that had not heard Paul was sent an apostle to the gentiles. What was the strategy he used? Did he go to the country towns and preach or the centers of society? We find Paul targeted the cities of influence. He went to cities like Corinth, Ephesus, Athens, Philippi, Thessalonica, and others. Thessalonica was the capital of the region of Macedonia; Philippi was one of the largest cities in Macedonia. These were no small cities. They were influential in the different regions they covered. By the work of the Holy Spirit in connection with this divine plan the gospel went to all the world by the time Paul wrote his epistle to the Colossians (Col 1:23).

What Israel was to the first century, America is to the present time. Israel was the launching platform for proclaiming a crucified, risen, and returning Savior. It is the same for America today. Those two series of talks stressed different aspects of this work. The first that I heard at South East Youth Conference was emphasizing the need of working for the immigrant population. The second emphasized the need of working the cities. Both ideas taken together we reach America and the countries that are afar off. When you look at the demographics for where certain people groups are located in the country, you will find them in clusters around certain cities. Arabs you will find mostly around San Francisco. Iranians you will find over on Long Island. Indians (as in those from India the country in Asia) you will find closer to New Jersey. If we would just work these areas, the gospel could go with trained converts to Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and other closed countries.

It would be nice to not reinvent the wheel. I say that because if someone is already doing this kind of work of major city evangelism targeting specific ethnic groups, I would like to know. As I already mentioned I have heard Dave Fiedler's talks before and I have even worked in the restaurant for a few days to see what they were doing in Wichita. I will be in touch with Mr. Fiedler about different ideas and concepts in the future. I would like to know if anyone else is doing something in different areas. Other information that would be useful is trust worthy anthropological research on these different people groups. In other words if you have useful information please share it.

The main reason for this article is people. The bottom line is no one man can do this on his own. If I am the only one who wants to do this work, I will do it anyway and try to persuade others to join me. This is not ideal, however. Different workers from different fields are needed so we have a complete team to meet the needs of all in the cities through whatever avenues necessary. I am asking for volunteers, researchers, and supporters.

Update 08/07/2012: After having come across a couple of resources it would appear the best way to go about this is using the outpost model outlined in the Spirit of Prophecy. Dr. James Lee and Elder Ted Wilson have both done research in this area, and a cursory glance at their findings has been more helpful than anything else in months. Dr. Lee's material seems to deal with more specifics and has broadened my expectations for further study. Dr. Lee's book A Compedium On Outpost-to-City Ministry is a treasure trove of information I have only had access to for just a few minutes.

The Reason for Prophets

One of the first chapters I read in the Bible after my conversion was Ezekiel 33. In it I found what God thought about watchmen who gave or did not give the warnings. The purpose for Ezekiel was to give a warning to the children of Israel. If he did not, God would require their blood at his hand. "In a special sense Seventh-day Adventists have been set in the world as watchmen and light-bearers. To them has been entrusted the last warning for a perishing world. On them is shining wonderful light from the Word of God. They have been given a work of the most solemn import,--the proclamation of the first, second, and third angels' messages. There is no other work of so great importance. They are to allow nothing else to absorb their attention." (Ev 119.3). As it was the purpose of the prophets to give a warning, so it is for Seventh-day Adventists. Those of us who have been changed by the Bible and Spirit of Prophecy have a solemn work to warn the world. That is why I have entitled this blog what it is, and I will post the things that I have learned to provide warning and encouragement.
